Dude, look at me. <-
If people (women and men) can be comfortable hugging me, they can be comfortable hugging you. Its not something that happens over night, but get to really know someone for like 6 months, its bound to happen. Especially with me - I'm a hugger.
I hug married women, married men, single women, single men... I've hugged gay men, and gay women. Kids. Animals. Morbidly obese men and women. Trees. Buildings. Vehicles. Police officers. Snowmen. Chairs. Lamps. Garages. Pieces of paper.
IT'S A HUG.
If people are paranoid you're going to sodomize them or stab their eyes out upon commencing hug, that's their problem, not yours. What you should do is look at your friend you've known for a while, and walk towards them with *give me a hug* style open arms. Don't make it a huge or serious deal out of it, because that's not what it is.
Do you know how many times I've been shot down for hugs? A lot. That's ok with me. Do you know how many different people want hugs after they start getting them from me? A lot. That's ok with me.
If deep down you don't really want a hug, then don't worry about any of the above.

You don't have to rub crutches when you hug. It's called leaning forward a little bit. That's how the pro huggers do it.
Yeah, but these pro huggers have had lots of practice. All kinds of mistakes can happen when you start out... and we don't want anybody to lose an eye.... Right?
I see myself as a pro-hugger, but how does one do that

Anyway... side hugs suck, it's like you're trying to say "Hey (person) you're my friend/relative/fellow churchgoer and I love (in a Christian way)/like/secretly hate, but still hug you because you're hot (or because I'm forced to, but I don't really want to hug you fully to show my affection (not necessarily romantic, but friendly and whatnot) towards you.
Dude, Jorge - that's the most confusing thing I've seen all day, and I was in a company compliance meeting this morning

Hugging cops and security guards is easy if you know them.
....if your drunk or holding something sharp, then its not so easy, even if you know them. _________________
I heart awkward hugs sometimes. I won't chase anyone, as that can get police involved, but I'll fake out hugs sometimes. Go to hug someone, they back away, and be like,
"I'm glad you got out of the way. I wanted to hug this staircase/potted plant/etc." ...whatever object they're close to. If nothing is around, then hug the ground.
....and sometimes I'll excessively thank them for getting out of the way, depending on who they are.
Also, I might hug people's arms only or foreheads only - which is (funny) weird depending on who you do it to. (usually really close friends and my brother)

hahaha awesome man!
How I got into hugging; I was at a Christian festival. called 'Opwekking'. big outdoor fest. It was Friday and I met some cool people. I don't really remember how or why, but all of a sudden I got the idea to hug random people, so I suggested it to the gang and we did it. We asked first, very few people didn't want one. If anything, people are very happy to receive one, to get some sincere love and affection. I like to believe we inspired people, as we got some copy cats. People would come up to me the next day, recognizing me as 'the hugging guy'. We kept on doing it for years after the first time. I slowed done a bit, but there is still nothing I like to do more then give or take a sincere hug. true love, true caring!

You're 17, at that age it's cute. But when you're a 28 year old single male it becomes scary to people.

you're from the Netherlands? I think things are way different in the United States, especially in New York. We're not as intimate as other countries, people here tend to be very self-focused... you'd realize it if you ever visited.
