Not very long ago I purchased my first DSLR as it was a real bargain. It was a Nikon D40 kit (camera + lens) for only € 199,- (about US$ 290,-)! Meanwhile I spent some more money for needed equipment and started to try different things.

One thing I find very interesting is infrared-photography. I bought an ir-filter and started shooting from the balcony. After that I edited the photos via PSE7+. Well, I think: moderate but getting better.

I might post a few of mine (done with IR film) here when I get a chance.
I loved doing IR Film photography, but it become too expensive, and then I could no longer get the film in any more, as the photographic shop had to get something like 10 rolls at a time, instead of 4 as was previously the case. And at like $50 a pop for film and processing (and that didn't include any printing) my efforts at IR photography come to a halt just as I was starting to get some results I really liked

I'm no great artist at all, but it's just fun to shoot photos and to edit them later.

I like the original B&W one... Pity it didn't render the sky blacker, possibly the time of day, and there was a bit more red / IR spectrum light around.

Yes, I think so, too. And those blurry clouds reflect pretty much of the infrared light and so turn the sky brighter. On the left upper corner there are less clouds and the sky gets darker. Apart from this: it's one of my first shots... Yesterday I tried it again and got the sky dark as the night. Looks very strange.

Original... Well, to be exact, the coloured pics are more original as the IR-filter is permeable to some normal visible light. The colours on the second pic are not artificially added afterwards. I just changed the red and the blue channel (as always) and fiddled around with the settings of PhotoShop et voila...

i like the very first image posted here. i've never had a chance to use a dslr or any ir-filters myself, but always found a few (ir-photos), that i had seen, to be pretty interesting...

I hope also to gradually get better.
I think it mainly depends on getting even better in handling PhotoShop.

hahah, yeah getting better helps. it really depends on your equipment, too. i'm not sure what exactly x-horizon does to his pictures, post-shoot. i always try not to edit my photos too much. i generally just increase the contrast slightly and/or increase the sharpness.

My other pictures (from my Iceland visit) were taken with my little Fuji F40fd. I have them in my Flickr album. These pics are not very good but a wonderful memory of the visit (my brother lives/works there).

well, man, most of those pictures are pretty good, especially considering you didn't use an slr.

here is my personal flickr, and most of the pictures were taken with my fuji s1000fd (and if they werent taken with that, then i used an hp photosmart 6mp thingy, or 1 of 2 different cell phones)

Wow, your pics are great! Every time I'm astounded how good the Fuji cams are (- and how affordable they are)!

Btw. all of my pics had been edited - but I (again) was very surprised, how many (hidden) details were already there and became visible by editing the pics - as my little Fuji tends to underexpose. Oh, and I did all photo shooting on Iceland in "auto" mode.
I think, in the end I should be satisfied with the results.

haha yeah man, i'm really impressed with the fuji cameras, myself. i ended up paying under $200 for my camera, but now it's like $300 or something on amazon.com. i still really want to invest in a d-slr with a 50mm lens. i will probably still keep my s1000fd because the macro/super-macro modes are quite amazing.

yeah most of my pictures are just edited by raising contrast, sometimes sharpness (which i usually avoid, though, because it creates this "webbing" effect in corners of some things in your picture. not sure why, or if there is a correct term for this other than "webbing"), and sometimes softness to give make them darker

Haha, yes, but the funny side of that is: this day it was really hot and the sun shone all day.

Yes, you're absolutely right! By now I'd never sell my little cam cause the newer ones won't get any better! I'll use it til it dies a natural death.

re. editing: I have the same experiences: editing as few as possible (if you like to watch your pics at full size).
I think, even after all editing it would be very difficult getting a good pic if there would be no reasonably good basic substance. (...oops, sorry, was this sentence right/understandable?... )
