| A 7.1 earthquake hit Christchurch city(2nd biggest city in NZ) around 4.30am Saturday, amazingly no one was killed. I live in a small town about 5Hrs away by car and a roll was felt here. I spoke to 3 different mates down there and they and their familys are ok. Ones house foundations have moved a bit, it was very violent with the first quake lasting 15 minutes, they are still getting aftershocks, one at 5. something. 90% of them now have power, water and phone i think, one mates got no water. Massive damage spread allover, just amazing no one was killed, considering it was the same scale as Haiti. I guess most people were in bed when it started. Pretty freaky. http://www.3news.co.nz/Home/LatestNews/tabid/699/Default.aspx |

| Only 2 injuries the last I heard, that's incredible considering this is a metropolitan area and the magnitude of the quake. The saving grace was it happened while most were still in bed. Plenty of clean up amounting to over 1 billion (with a B) dollars of damage.
Seems NZ had a strong quake about a year ago? |

Seems NZ had a strong quake about a year ago? yeah, 7.8, Fiordland, July 16, 2009 - only 12km deep and on the coastline at Milford near Dusky Sound: the largest earthquake since the 1931 Napier earthquake. The biggest aftershock was a magnitude 6.1 that occurred 20 minutes after the main shock. It is a huge national park, so was good no one lives there. In CH-CH yesterday, i think there was alot more smaller injuries, i saw some testimonies on tv from hospital. A cook got pinned down by an oven and knocked out. A taxi driver got crushed by building on his car. A young boy fell out of his bed from his second story bedroom when the side wall of the house collaspsed. heres a better link for Canterbury quake: As it happened http://tvnz.co.nz/national-news/canterbury-quake-happened-3759958 |
