Subject: My whack at a cover song... (HERE IT IS!) Tue May 18, 2010 4:31 pm
After some contemplation, I'm going to do a cover song - the Hguols way.
It will be a "single" type thing - just one track, digital release only and a FREE download.
Actually, I'm going to cover two songs, make it into one epic Hguols track. (my goal is to get this song in the 10 minute range) I'm up for the challenge!
Anyone in here familiar with the Legacy of Kain - Soul Reaver games? I was going to cover the main themes of Soul Reaver 1 and Soul Reaver 2. If you're not familiar with the songs, (or are familiar and just need a little refresher) they're featured in these videos:
Once again, these songs will be redone in the typical Hguols grandiose and bombastic fashion.
The single will be called "Reaver of Souls", with the track affectionately entitled, "Ozar Midrashim, Ariel's Lament"
EDIT: The "Reaver of Souls" single is complete. Click the link below or the artwork above to get the album.

Okay, I am extremely unfamiliar with those games so I am going to ask a stupid question.
Are you covering the song "Ozar Midrashim"?

Yes. Kurt Harland is one of the guys behind the music for Soul Reaver.
He took the Soul Reaver theme from one of his existing songs from his group Information Society, that song is Ozar Midrashim 1.1. (but it has extra stuff in the beginning - I'm molding my cover on the game version of the song)
I don't know what the name means or where it came from, but that's its name. It's more or less an instrumental song.
I am also covering the song "Ariel's Lament" which is the main theme of Soul Reaver 2. Both songs sound quite similar (if you'll notice from the video links in my original post) and I'm planning on making one long Hguols track, combining those two songs.
It's coming along nicely by the way....

Cool, I have loved that song since I heard it on "Don't Be Afraid" like forever ago. I can't wait to hear the cover.
Cover "Walking Away" and "Think" next time .. hehe

That's cool that you're familiar with that album and the original song! I've only heard of it because of Kurt's association with Legacy of Kain.

I have been a huge InSoc fan since their self titled album actually. They are probably my favorite synthpop band actually.

Heh. This version I'm working on doesn't sound very synth pop-ish at all. ^_^
It sounds like some pretty sick black metal. Being that you're familiar with Ozar Midrashim, you could probably imagine a black metal version of that.
I'm sticking very close to the melodies at hand - yet, adding some flavor in the distortion for variety's sake.

I'm done with the Ozar Midrashim part of the song - now writing Ariel's Lament. Still looks like I could have this done early next week.
This sounds good. (and I think Kurt is looking forward to hearing it himself)

This will be on my download list shortly! I have the original Soul Reaver game for my PSX. I never quite figured it out, but it was aesthetically interesting and the music had a nice ominous feel (where there was music).
You know what you should cover - I'd love to hear your Hguols take on Toto's music from the 1985 Dune film adaptation:
End Credits Theme "Take My Hand"
or an epic metal version of the "heavy" part of the Dune movie music that starts around 1:47 or 1:48 in this video:
If you've seen the movie, you'd understand what I mean by the "heavy" part. That would be EPIC!!!

"Take my Hand" sent me running. I'm sorry Josh, I couldn't stomach that.
The 10 minute soundtrack melody was more like it. However, it's eerily similar to this instrumental by Cradle of Filth.
I liked the song a lot, but it's too similar to this song.
Plus, another reason I chose theme songs from Legacy of Kain was because they were games I played in high school. I've beaten, multiple times, Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen 2, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2, Legacy of Kain: Defiance. I've put many hours into listening to the music as well as playing the games.
I seen Dune one time as a kid, and don't remember anything about it. (other than people having really blue eyes and "the spice".)
You mentioning the cover request made me think of something else, that might be right up our alleys. Play any Castlevania games other than Symphony of the Night?
Let me put it this way, play any other Castlevania games other than SOTN that Michiru Yamane did the music for? (^_^)
A song from SOTN and LOI collaborated into one track would be epic. If you're not familiar with Lament of Innocence, here are some songs:
and my track pick....

Dude, covering ANYTHING from the SOTN soundtrack would be flipping EPIC!!!!! That'd rule
Another one you should consider giving the Hguols treatment to:
One of my favorites, no matter what ANYONE things of the movie itself - John Williams is a GENIUS!

That song is EXCELLENT Josh! I'll agree about John Williams!
One thing though (that I already mentioned a bit) was that I would only be likely to cover something that has been a decent part of my life. I've seen the new Star Wars movies on Spike..... this hardly compares to the hours upon hours I've spent on Symphony of the Night, among other games.
I've never been a huge movie buff. I can think of only a few movies that made a lasting impression on me, both the movie and the music.... but even then, that pales in comparison to a collection of video games, and their music.
