I don't,
since we have a homegroup that gets together at someones place, and we never ask for tithing.

When I start getting an income (when I have a job, not allowence) I will have a look and support some kind of ministry probably.

But since we have no pastor or elders, nor a building that ''needs'' to be decorated, we don't see any use in asking for tithings.

Sometimes we have a guest coming from abroad, and then we all give something in order for him or her to get at least enough money to cover travel expenses

In God We Trust by Pillar on the Fireproof album is cool.
Giving your time as well as investing your money for charity is a wise choice.
My Monestary in Detroit has had a open soup kitchen for 40 years or more.
Thousands are enjoying a good meal every year. Pass the buck!
Music Ministry will allow many to have enough money to give to charity.
A Band of 5 persons can invest their money for studio time and equipment.
Jesus Rocks! And He will provide for the band in prayerful songs - lyrics.
Most of what I have has nothing to do with money.

I just give wherever I can lol. I give as much as I can at church be it in money, time, or whatever. I also feel that God meant out in the world to tithe by just loving people thru their faults. "Treat everybody like they're gonna die at midnight and expect nothing in return."

I'm not so sure that tithing is limited necessarily to just money.

In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word for tithe is 'masser' which means a tenth part. God instituted three kinds of tithes for Israel. They are:

- A tithe of the produce of the land to support the Levites who had no inheritance in Canaan
(Leviticus 27:30-33; Numbers 18:21-31)
- A tithe of the produce of the land to sponsor religious festivals. If the produce was too burdensome for a family to carry to Jerusalem, they could convert it into money (Dueteronomy 14:22-27, sometimes called the festival tithe)
- A tithe of the produce of the land collected every third year for the local Levites, orphans, strangers, and widows (Deuteronomy 14:28-29; 26:12-13).

This was the biblical tithe. Twenty percent yearly and 10 percent every three years works out to 23.3 percent of their income every year, not 10 percent. God commanded all all three tithes (Nehemiah 12:44, Malachi 3:8-12, Hebrews 7:5). These tithes consisted of the produce of the land - which included the seed of the land, the fruit of the land, and the herd or flock. It was the product of the land, not money.

A parallel between Israel's tithe can be seen in modern western taxation systems. Taxes support national workers (priests), their holidays (festivals), and the poor (strangers, widows, orphans).

I hold that tithing is/was for Israel and was part of the Law. We are no longer under the Law, but grace. Tithing is not compulsory. But cheerfully giving according to our ability is encouraged in the New Testament (2 Corinthians 8:3-12, 9:5-13). But to whom should our giving be given to is another thing all together...

2 Corinthians 9:7 "let each one give as they purposes in their hearts, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver."

1 Samuel 15:22 "To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams."

I'm a big believer in tithing and giving financial support to the church, and there's nothing wrong with being generous and supportive towards our families, friends, even complete strangers.

The main man in Luke 6 says: "Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back."
, and
"love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High."

I do hold to the fact that if you have no money, don't feel pressured to have to give anything. give out of the abundance you have, or the desire and generosity of your heart. never give because "you have to" or grudgingly.

and 10% is fine, but 5 or 25% I'm sure is also cool Smile

I also believe that churches/outreach/missions work depends on financial support. Without that, a lot of missionaries and missions could not survive, so put your money where your mouth is, but if you have nothing to spare, don't worry about it. God's got everything under control.

I give what I can money wise, I give of my time and offer to do many things... I see this as ok for me now. If prompted by the Spirit I am happy to change it.

also note that time where Jesus saw people dropping money in the container. rich people put in a lot but when the poor woman put in her measly "2 mites", Jesus said that she'd given much more than the others had.

That's in Luke 21:3-4 "this poor widow has put in more than all; for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had.”

trephining makes a good point too. It's a good thing to consider who or what you're giving to.

I used to be very into giving at least 10% and all, but now I am about GIVING not necessarily TITHING. Giving, not tithing. I like to give, and if I have NO money at all (which is very often the case these days), then I wait until I have something, and give some of that. That which I can afford to give (because from a secular point of view, I shouldn't be giving any of it, but I feel called to by God, and do so with a CHEERFUl heart, as the Bible commands). I don't like how some churches or people breathe down people's necks about HAVING to give 10%, no matter how poor you are. It certainly makes some people give their money in a forced manner, which is contrary to the scripture about giving cheerfully and willingly:

"Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.

Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." -2 Corinthians 9:6-7 (NASB)

I have to study more on this though. This is where I stand as of now, not sure about whether we have (or should have to) give 10%. As far as I'm concerned, if I can afford it, I'd give WAY more than just 10%! And if I have nothing, I have nothing in terms of money to give. In that case, I like to give in other ways, as I should be doing regardless (such as ministry at church, serving others, etc). Regardless of whether I HAVE to tithe 10% (which I don't believe is required for us), I like to give anyways.
And besides just finances, or time, or serving in a "ministry" at church, I think it's obviously about what we invest in, and how that shows our hearts and how committed we are to God. Sacrifice. "Where your treasure is, there your heart lies also".

The problem with tithing is that you place yourself under the law for doing so. To truly tithe you would give over 30%, if you add up all the things that was required to give to the temple.

But what should be done is this: Give according to your heart.

How you love God will determine how much you give.
