Electric guitar to learn on

I've decided to try learning guitar (I'm more of a drum guy).

I'm an absolute beginner to *any* guitars, but I'm interested in electric and mainly learning rhythm guitar.

What's a good option for learning? Obviously I'm not after a Gibson or anything like that... just something that is as cheap as possible in price without being utter crap.

What did you learn on?

get a starter kit with yamaha, can pick them up for like £90 here..

Haven't come across any Yamaha kits. I checked out a local store and they had a bunch of kits including amps by brands Aria, Epiphone, ESP, and Squier. I have no idea what's good and what's not. Most of the Arias are around $300 NZ (prolly about 130 UK), the ESP and Squier kits are slightly more. The Epiphones are all acoustic, but I'm more interested in electric.

OK, well the kits they're selling include the F-10, M-10, and VIPER-10 guitars. What's the difference and what would you recommend? They simply appear to be slightly different body shapes to me.

each model is different style so it depends on your preference. The differences focus mostly on the fretboard and type of wood being used.

Does that make them sound different? Or is it just a comfort/aesthetics thing?

I thought it was the best looking anyway. Got it today, it was on special: $500 NZ (I dont know UK exchange rates, but $1 NZD is around $0.71 USD).

I picked up a DVD series as well for learning, called 'Rock House'. I saw it recommended over at Musicians Friend . com. Looking forward to learning this guitar thing.
