PostSubject: Tattoos   Sat Apr 03, 2010 1:38 pm

If theres a thread...SORRY!
Hey guys lookit this:
Quote :

Q: Should Christians get tattoos? I want one, but my Bible study girlfriends insist Scripture prohibits body art.

A: Christians getting tattoos is a timely and controversial topic. Google this issue, and you'll see opinions varying from "Go for it!" to "You'll go to hell for it." Many Christians have grappled with the tattoo question.

What does the Bible say?

Ink opponents typically ignore the verse that says God "inscribed" a picture of his people on his palms (Isaiah 49:16, NASB; the Amplified Bible says "tattooed"), and instead ominously quote another Old Testament verse: "You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the Lord" (Leviticus 19:28, ESV). Understanding the context of the Leviticus verse, however, is imperative.

God gave this command to the Israelites around 1444 B.C. (right after the parting of the Red Sea) to forbid them from practicing the idolatrous customs they'd picked up in Egyptian captivity. Their captors had a nasty habit of slashing themselves to express grief and to appease their pantheon of imaginary gods. The Egyptians also tattooed their bodies with symbols of pagan gods. So Jehovah, the only true God, essentially said to the Israelites, I don't want you to practice those silly superstitions anymore. You're my people, and I love you. The heart of God's message isn't about body art, but about reminding the Israelites they belong to him.

Perhaps the gals in your small group didn't consider God's original intent for Leviticus. Because if Christians today adhered to the literal application of every moral and ceremonial rule handed down to the Israelites, no one could eat shrimp or cheeseburgers (Leviticus 11); moms would be "unclean" after childbirth (40 days of separation from society after a boy, twice as long after a girl), so new mothers couldn't go to Beth Moore Bible studies or Curves or book clubs for more than a month (Leviticus 12); menstruating women also would have to separate from friends and family for seven days during that time of month (Leviticus 15); no one could wear clothes woven from both linen and wool (Leviticus 19); and everyone who went out to eat after church could merit a possible stoning (Exodus 31).

The great news of the gospel is that Old Testament law no longer binds Christians. Avoiding tattoo parlors or Red Lobster doesn't make you righteous—Jesus' death and resurrection do! While you need to remember your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16; 2 Corinthians 6:16), you don't have to let other people's sense of religious propriety constrain you.

Maybe you should invite your Bible study friends over for a girl's movie night to watch Madea's Family Reunion, because midway through the film, a hilarious scene perfectly illustrates the danger of taking a Bible verse out of context!

That actually clears up alot of issues I was having.
And as far as the tattooing in the Bible, isnt that more like scarification?
Kinda like what NIghtcrawler has in the xmen movies???

not biblical, but i love this...

"The mantra of all body modders the world over. The belief or understanding that you are not your body. That you exist beyond the flesh and blood that holds you erect. That a part of you is eternal, and never changing. That your body is transient and will die and decay, but that which is really you will ride on, further exploring the realms of consciousness..."

Sounds Hindu.

Tattoos I think is a conscience issue. If your conscience is against it, then you should not get one, but neither should you forbid anyone else from having one. If your conscience says it is ok, then one should look into what a tattoo does to the body, get educated and make an informed decision.

Should a Christian get tattooed all over? I know one who has many, but he is a new Christian, but he is fairly open minded, so i am not sure if it is his newness to the faith or his temperament toward life. I think both with him, but he is old enough to make his own choices on life.

I do not mind tattoos, my brother has two, one on both forearms.

My 96th Thesis? Is it a Catholic church? There'd be a number of reasons they'd be shocked if it was that song.

Tattoos are interesting for me. I have friends who have gotten meaningful intelligent tattoos and I think that's awesome. On a massive scale, I think it's dumb a lot of the time. So many people just get one to get one, which is even worse when they end up really lame looking. It's one of those things I wish was more underground and elitist friendly. Is that wrong?
I'm not saying that because I want to be elite and I have tattoos. I have none and most likely will never get any. I don't trust my tastes to stay the same forever. Whether that be in regards to meaning or placement... I like maintaining options for change and progression.

In the past, I have thought it was unbiblical. Especially, if it wasn't spiritual. I think I had based that on the fact that we don't own ourselves, we can't even swear by our own hairs on our head, and what right do we have to place images on ourselves. Ohhh, that's right. I got that a little wrong. The swearing issue was the big deal to me. I used to think it was dumb even if you got something spiritual, because you don't save yourself and have no real authority to say that although you live for Christ in the present moment, you will in the future. The logic being, making a permanent mark on your skin that illustrates your being a Christian is assuming authority and power that isn't yours.
No need to argue with me or tell me that's stupid logic. Note: "in the past."

I agree tattoos are very much a conscience decision. I think as long as the tattoo doesn't promote anything sinful then there is nothing in the bible that prohibits it.

Tattoos are cool. I might get a few eventually. If I do decide to get any, though, I'm going to invest a crapton of money into it. If I'm going to get a permanent mark on my body, it'd better look pretty dang good.

When someone says that, I always respond with this...

Yes, we are supposed to judge each person by their fruits or inner-self and not by outward appearances, but get real, nooo ooone does this. That's why you don't see me walking around with a pink collar shirt from Abercrombie on wearing blue jeans that suck to my skin. I realize that, regardless of what you think, people will and do judge by outward appearance more often than not. I made a conscious decision and choose to portray myself as a metalhead. If I wear my inner-self on my outward sleeve, it cuts through the bullshit of "getting to know me" as anyone with functioning eyes can see that I am into metal and "probably play guitar".

So I say, yes, outward appearance is important.
