I get this question a LOT--which means it's on the hearts of a lot of people.

I'm sure everyone here has plenty of opinions on this matter... Here's my two cents...

Don't think of your music as secular vs. christian... I.e. don't think that just be cause a band is "labeled" Christian that it's all great... or if a band is on a "secular" label that it's all bad. Be discerning (this requires prayer)... and listen to music that edifies your spirit... I listen to some music that some Christians would object to... but I see great meaning in it. So -- yes, of course stay away from dark, evil, nasty stuff... that's a no brainer----but don't just write off anything that's not on a "Christian label"... that's crazy dude... there are lots of Christian Musicians out there in "secluar" bands --- and they are producing incredible music that honors God.

I agree.. sort of... I mean with talking to you I'm not sure exactly what you're saying... I mean... there are lots of songs out there that are just written by lost people... and they're just wrting about life... and the things they write about are very real and poinient... I really appreciate those songs... but I totally agree that if a band/artist has wicked intents or is just celebrating or pushing FLESHLY JUNK -- that is out of place and I wouldn't support that.

This, of course, is my side of the street.... but there is music that doesn't do anything
to/for/against/with my spirit or spirituality.

In many instances, I either like the melody, like the beat, or like some other aspect to the music that sounds appealing. Period. No spiritual catch. Lyrical content, sometimes, is give or take.

There is no spiritual experience for me at all in listening to certain musics, buying certain toilet papers, filing certain paperwork, lifting certain objects, petting certain animals.

I personally think that too many Christians have a zero-tolerance policy that equates "music" with "ministry". I don't believe that to be true at all. I also think too many Christians take the "If you're with me, you're against me" approach, which can be more damaging than healthy.

Just like I can get some entertainment from movies that feature/dictate conduct/dialogue that I wouldn't approve, I can hold the same regard to music. The lies in Satanic metal don't bother me, and it still doesn't change the fact that they come from God's creation.

Just because I view or listen to entertainment that doesn't correspond with my walk with Christ, that doesn't mean I should boycott, or recoil as from a hot flame. That "zero tolerance" is zero-sense.

Personal convictions aside (that's a whole other topic) I think there's no music that should be un-listenable to Christians.

Hguols... interesting.... I would of course disagree with a lot of what you wrote... but I totally respect you man.

But I really do have to say that I believe with all my heart (and my personal experience proves this out -- for me) that what we allow to enter our mind and heart has an impact on us... actually, I know it does in my case. If I look at sexually explicit images... even by accident--it's THERE... in my mind... I can't erase it and I hate it---because I know that God's Word calls me to be pure in my thinking. Same with music... I would never equate music and entertainment--both of which have the ability to affect, motivate, inspire and even depress people--with purchasing toilet paper... dude... common... toilet paper? Seriously?

Hey--I'm all for opinions... but toilet paper, lifting objects and petting animals?? I don't see how any of those even remotely would have the same impact on a heart the way music does... Of course, I know you're point was that music has no impact on you... but for the vast majority of human beings throughout history---music has totally impacted hearts and so what we choose to listen to--absolutely affects our lives, spirits, etc.

I'm not a religious nut who says never listen to secular music... I actually said quite the opposite above... but do say--"If it's trashy... feeds the flesh (sin nature)... demeans God... exalts Satan/sin... stay away from it." And I would even go further to state that that's not just me saying that---that's the Apostle Paul dude.

I see it exactly as Pastor Brad (at least, from what I see posted here) in that restricting yourself ONLY to artists/bands, record labels and/or distributors who have chosen to openly label themselves as "Christian" is not a necessary requirement for salvation, nor will it guarantee spiritual growth.

I know of many mainstream bands/artists who promote positive Christian living more openly than some of those who carry the "Christian" label. I have also experienced being off-stage with some "Christian" artists/bands who I honestly could not tell were "Christian" by lifestyle or lyrical content.

Should we actively seek to support TRUE "Christian" artists/bands? Yes, we should support them as best we can through not only purchasing their merch, but most importantly through prayer, promotion and friendship.

I personally have chosen to only listen to music that is not only entertaining, but also inspires, edifies and maybe even educates me spiritually and mentally. Do I still listen to some of my old "mainstream" artist/band discs? From time to time, yes.

Philippians 4:8 - "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things".

If listening to secular metal is wrong, then Christian metal is built upon sin, because the pioneers of Christian metal had to listen to secular metal. Once upon a time, there was no Christian metal. The musical style of heavy metal originated from secular music.

Thanks for the reply! My apologies for a misunderstanding, but I tried to emphasize in my post that "certain" musics I listen to have no spiritual impact, not all music.

A genre of music that I don't care about, or don't like to listen to, it might as well be toilet paper. Even though I might not dislike the music, it just doesn't do anything for me. That right there tells me its not the music, or entertainment at all.... it's the individual.

About the individual - someone might be able to look at a picture of a person being hung from a crane, and not really think much about it. (perhaps a fleeting "How awful", but then moving on to something else) Another person might look at that picture, burst into tears, and leave the room. They might be haunted by that picture all day, perhaps all week.

If I look at a explicit image on accident, and that image remains in my mind - I AM KEEPING IT THERE. I'm a firm believer that I can't control what pops into my head sometimes, but I CAN control how long I keep something there. If it's still there, that's my choice.

A bottle of booze, an 8-ball of coke, a pornographic magazine, a satanic black metal CD - all of these things don't influence people. They're inanimate objects. People BECOME influenced by these things because of weaknesses, choice, and perhaps genetic predispositions when it comes to chemical addictions.

Not everyone that drinks a bottle of whiskey becomes an alcoholic, not everyone that does a line of coke becomes addicted, not everyone that views upon porn becomes engulfed in lust, and not everyone that listens to satanic black metal loses/diminishes their Christian faith.

I take into account all of the History of Music.
Gold records are very dear to me.
And the Christian Rock time line is from
Stairway to Heaven in the Rocking 70s.

I heard hours appon hours of Secular Music.
Solid Gold uplifting.
Strong content Love Songs where everywhere.

Many Artists were not Evil People as they say.
Yet there was sex, drugs, and Rock n' Roll.
No one I knew was listening to Praise and Worship
but people who loved Church Music on Sunday.

For me the 80s was where Christian Metal came
on the seen. At least in my neighbor hood. And
I would say, all over the States.
I went to the Cornerstone festival. I heard,
Vengeance Rising, White Cross, and the Bloodgood Band.

I grew up with Mom and Dad's Symphony
Music and Classical Piano.

I listen to the Detroit Blues Project when I can.
I know I've heard some Gold Hit Records a 100
times.

I don't know Evil Bands or search for them
but I know Satan wants you to sell your Soul
for Rock n' Roll. As the album said.

Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells
me so. To anyone who hears this song, we
are weak. He is strong!

So Rock on with Jesus he's the One.

Yup--this subject certainly get the juices flowing... :-)

Man---All I know--is Jesus is awesome! I love Him and I just want to do, look at, listen to, write/sing about... things that will honor Him... or at teh very least .. things that I can honestly feel good about -- in respect to my relationship with Him.


So--WHATEVER label the music comes with --- if I lsten to it and it's a blessng==awesome... if it's just "amoral" but it has a good beat ==cool.... but if it celebrates, exalts or promotes ungodly, fleshly or evil stuff.... nope--ain't gonna listen...
