| What is it, in your own understanding?
( Do not bother with the definition- to miss the mark - please. )
I will post my concise version of what I believe it is-
Sin is Deciding that you are Good.

Or can we know God's will? 1 Thessalonians 5:18"Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." 1 Peter 2:15"For it is God's will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men." Ephesians 5:8-17"For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9(for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10and find out what pleases the Lord. 11Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, 14for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."
Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is." |

| So Transgression against doing good and giving thanks is Sin, munkey?
Surely Sin is something deeper and more inner than the mere transgression of those things? |

That is sin. You cannot transgress God's will. It is going to happen whether you sin or not. By your original statement, one can imply that "theoretically" you can live forever by not transgressing God's will. |

| Sin is not only transgression against God's will, but also breaking "morale" and society's law. Sin, like many things, is relative to a certain degree... especially since one area of the world has a different law/morale than another. Within war itself, sin has its own relativity.
It also has its fine lines. (A big "if" here, but what if deliberately killing someone (from a hypothetical medical standpoint) saved thousands of people from dying?)
The bottom line is, it's not so much how the "car got in the ditch". We're all sinners - the car is definitely stuck.... To me it's more important on how to get the car out..... and doing everything we can to stop future slips and all out crashes.
....besides, it's almost pointless to debate about a debt that's already been paid. |

Just for sake of definitions, there are a couple different types of "will". I believe folks here are speaking of God's "revealed will" meaning his moral commands ("Do not steal", "Honor your father and mother", "Don't eat your neighbor", etc). Not his "sovereign" or "decretive" will (such as his plans for the exact date for the end of the world, what the temperature will be in Omaha next Saturday, etc). As humans, we experience/have the same thing. An example: Think of a boss in an office. His "revealed will" (policy and practices) for his employees is that they do their work and don't look at porn on the company computers. His "decretive will" is that he's going to let all of his employees go home a half-hour early Friday because it's a holiday weekend. His "revealed will" is what he expects every employee to know and follow (because it's the code of conduct) or else there could be repercussions. His "decretive will" is what he is going to do or cause to happen and the only way someone knows the specifics is if he pointedly tells someone. When people are talking about "following God's will" here, I'm pretty sure they're talking about the former - the moral command - which *is* knowable. It's the specifics of the "decretive" will that are not totally knowable, which is what the Calvinism thread touches upon. Hopefully, that doesn't derail the conversation here too much. |

| Sin is rebellion. All that it means. And if we think of rebellion as freedom, we have it all wrong. Rebellion against God is bad from the roots to the fruits. It's like leaving life for death. A stupid trade off for only a couple minutes of pleasure or any other vain things.
Rebellion is refusing to submit to God by transgressing His Will. And we know His Will by what's in The Bible. The Ten Commandments, etc.
By default, we were born in sin. Before we could think twice, we sinned. Good thing God sent Jesus. Otherwise, there would be no hope for anyone. Not enough animals to sacrifice for all our sins. From there on, we must choose our master. Cause sin is, in fact, a slave master that we choose. So it's sin or God. One love you and gives you everlasting life Through Jesus. The other hates you and gives you a resemblance of happiness of satisfaction for an eternity in hell.
To sin while we know better is a very, very dangerous game to play. Not only in the long term, but in the short term as well since sinning opens up demonic doors in our lives. Every time we sin, there are more worms inside of us who influence us to go even further away from God and who torment us.
Whatever God does or says is, in the end, always for our own good. Even if with our little intelligence we see it as a restriction from something "fun". But that's cause He knows better than us. And in His Love He tells us, but more often than not we choose not to listen.
So, repent and submit yourselves to God. <-- The best thing you can do for yourself in all your life.

| anyone who thinks they never sinned is deceiving themselves. I sinned. A lot. But I live what I preach. Do I still sin? Yes. Willingly? Rarely. I am not boasting, but I decided to commit myself to God entirely. And I encourage everyone to do the same.
Sanctification is extremely important, but many forget to preach about it. We don't wanna offend anyone and make them leave the church, right?...
It's not about going on a stage and boasting about how the preacher is holier than others. It's encouraging others to live for God not only in words, but in actions too through sanctification. This is the main aspect of The Gospel and many are deceived by not worrying enough about their purity in front of God. The whole new testament screams this: CHANGE and be SAVED by CHRIST's sacrifice. |

.. it is clearly defined in the bible multiple times, for instance. 16So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. 17For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. 18But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law. 19The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other. |

| Sin is simply acting as if you are Good, when according to Christ, only the Father is Good.
It is not Goodness that saves a man.. it is righteousness. It is Good that condemns a man.. but all Good but God's is false. As scripture teaches, only the righteous enter into heaven.
Good is playing God and therefore taking on Judgment. ( Judge not, lest ye be Judged. )
Righteousness is knowing that you are not Good, and that only God is... everyday.
That is why I say that Sin is Deciding that you are Good. .. Becuase in so doing you are taking on godhood and the Judgment which belongs to God. |
